How do I know if I have termites in my home?

You likely have termites if you see mud tubes, hollow-sounding wood, discarded wings or tiny wood-coloured pellets.

Bubbling paint and doors that suddenly stick are also warning signs. Don't wait for proof. Book an inspection.

What do termite mud tubes look like?

Thin, pencil-width tunnels of dried soil, usually brown or grey, running up walls, foundations or pipes.

Termites build them to travel without drying out in open air. Scraping one off fixes nothing: the colony is elsewhere and will rebuild it.

How do I tell termites from flying ants?

Termites have a straight, thick waist, straight antennae and four wings of equal length. Flying ants have a pinched waist, bent antennae and longer front wings.

Winged insects swarming indoors often point to a mature colony nearby. Take a photo and keep a few wings for the technician.

Can termites damage tiled walls or door frames?

Yes. They damage door frames, skirting boards and wooden fixtures directly, and can leave tiles hollow or loose by tunnelling behind them.

They don't eat tiles; they eat what is around and behind them. Tap the area: a hollow sound means it's time to call.
